Holly Bolthouse

piano (studio full at this time)

Holly has taught piano at The Music Center since it opened in 2000 and is skilled at motivating young children through her practical yet engaging teaching style. Her technique includes learning through note reading and aurally taught pieces while rewarding students for goal achievement. Holly began piano lessons as a second grader from a family friend. Progressing in her career, she later studied with various recording artists, including Nancy Erickson, Kathryn Mix, and Daniel Longhin. Holly has also accompanied soloists, church choirs, Lakeview musicals, Marshall Schools Choirs, and the Battle Creek Boychoir and Battle Creek Girls Chorus. While Holly loves performing, her favorite musical experience occurred as an audience member. “Taking a music appreciation class, I had the opportunity to listen to a quartet from Julliard,” she recalls. “The piece was so moving, and I held my breath as it ended. After the quartet finished, with me sitting in the front row center, I burst into tears. I do not remember the exact piece, but I do remember the moment and feeling the music evoked in me.” While stage fright is a fear Holly has had to overcome, she leverages her love of accompanying choirs to manage this fear. “It began by accompanying my middle school choir,” she explains. “Today, I stay comfortable playing in front of others by accompanying various choirs. This technique has allowed me to face and manage this fear consistently.” Holly is certified through the Royal Conservatory of Music, Canada Elementary Instruction, and trained in Suzuki and Kindermusik. She also received musical training from Kellogg Community College and is a member of the Battle Creek Area Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association. Holly considers herself a lifelong learner and is currently taking Jazz lessons. “Jazz is a new language for someone who is classically trained, and I find myself listening to and studying old jazz standards,” she adds. In her free time, she enjoys CrossFit training, manages her family’s rental business, and runs a few Airbnbs.
