Danae Mollenkamp

Piano, Voice

Danae Mollenkamp is a passionate educator and music therapist who recently joined The Music Center (TMC) and the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra. Originally from Watertown, Wisconsin, Danae brings 25 years of piano training and 16 years of vocal training to her students. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from the University of Iowa, she teaches both beginner and advanced students, offering a diverse and enriching musical experience. Danae’s love for music began early, with piano lessons from her aunt starting at the age of four and voice lessons during middle school. “While I have so many good experiences performing music, my most memorable moments have been as a music therapist and teacher, connecting with others through music,” says Danae. She recalls a powerful memory of teaching piano to a woman in her 90s at a skilled nursing facility: “It was amazing to witness her joy in learning a new skill—it proves that anyone can learn, no matter their age.” Danae’s journey as a musician hasn’t been without challenges. She has had to overcome hypermobile joints, which require her to focus on proper technique to avoid pain or injury while practicing and performing. “It’s been a challenge, but it has made me even more aware of the importance of good technique, not just for myself but for my students,” she reflects. In addition to piano and voice, Danae plays guitar, flute, and various percussion instruments. Her musical tastes range from jazz and gospel to folk and alternative rock. Danae also has a deep passion for teaching students of all abilities. “I love making learning fun with games and strategies that make practice manageable,” she says. She often incorporates other instruments, such as percussion, to help teach musical concepts in a creative and engaging way. Danae can’t imagine life without music, but if she weren’t a musician, she’d likely work in healthcare. Alongside teaching, she uses music therapy to connect with children, older adults, and hospice patients. “Music has such a profound ability to connect and heal,” Danae shares. “It’s a privilege to share that with others.”
